THE LEGACY OF Dolly L. Carter “ To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under the heaven” Ecclesiastes’ 3:1 Oh what a joyous day, for the late Peter and Mamie Carter in the city of Chicago on the East side also known as South Chicago, June 10, 1956. The blessing from the Lord had arrived and it was a beautiful daughter named Dolly (aka) Dot. Dolly was taught at an early age that she would need to make a personal decision to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Being raised in a Christian home where devotions and the Word of God was a way of life, Dolly accepted the challenge of getting to know God for herself. Her journey started at New Prospect MBC. She stopped by Greater Rising Sun MBC, and her final stop was, The New Promise Land MBC, where she remained a loyal, faithful member serving in any capacity needed. She was the president of the Good Shepherd’s Ministry until her death. Dolly loved her church family and had great respect for her pastor, Rev. Marcus Wilson and his wife, First Lady Wilson. If you wanted to rouse her up talk about Pastor Wilson or First Lady Wilson. She would get you straight. Dolly was a kind and gentle soul. She often said it was her mission in life to help other people. She was always willing to give you a ride with no charge, feed people on the street and set them up in a hotel for a period of time. She never did anything expecting something back. She always said these are God‘s resources; he just appointed me to be an overseer. She enjoyed making people laugh and the simple things in life such as television shows Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle. Dolly believed and trusted God in all areas of her life. In September 1979 she started her career at Illinois Department of Corrections at Statesville (aka Da Ville) and remained for 32 years. She worked in various capacities, retiring in September of 2011. After retirement, she traveled and loved to try different restaurants. Anyone who knew Dolly knew she loved to eat. Dolly is preceded in death by her parents Peter and Mamie, sisters Clarkie, Willa and Evelyn and brothers Peter Jr, Robert Lee and Richard. Dolly leaves to cherish her memories: her son Joel (Tanesha) granddaughter Zoe- Nicole, who was the joy of her life, her sister Frances (Myrthel )who loved her unconditionally, sister in law Rolena Carter, godparents Thurman and Irene Hunt and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family. Special friendships include: Rev. Monty and Audrey Ackers, Diane Hampton, Kathleen Price and Donnie Patterson. Terri and Tarenda, thank you for all of your support and help during her illness.
