James Bennett, Jr

August 17, 1951 - March 18, 2016

James R. Bennett Jr. was born to the union of James R. Bennett Sr. and Lorraine Bennett in Chicago, IL on August 17, 1951. He was their firstborn child and only son. He was preceded in death by his father, James Sr., and both of his sisters, Lorna and Sharon. James graduated from Westcott Elementary School and attended Calumet High School. Inspired by his own father, James left high school and joined the military. He proudly served in the Navy. He thoroughly enjoyed travelling the world while he was in the Navy and would often share stories of his travels. After he left the Navy, he worked for many years at the University of Chicago. James was raised with a fervent belief in the importance of family. On March 3, 1973, James married the love of his life, Dianne Tuck. Dianne was truly the apple of his eye and he dedicated his life to making sure that she was happy. Together they raised three children: Rita, Renee, and James P. Bennett. Despite many challenges, James always remained a pillar of strength for his family. James and Dianne were both committed to making their marriage last forever like they had seen with their parents and consequently this year they celebrated 43 years of marriage. James was very friendly and personable. He also loved watching games and listening to his music in his “man cave.” Above all else, James will best be remembered for being a true family man. He loved his family immensely and unconditionally and they knew it. Some of James’ greatest and most joyful moments came from spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. James suffered many illnesses throughout his life, but he fought through them all. Tragically, at the age of 64, James died in a house fire on Friday, March 18, 2016 (“Midnight” the family guinea pig also died in the fire.). He leaves to mourn, his dear mother, Lorraine, his devoted wife, Dianne, his three children: Rita, Renee, and James P., his grandchildren: Nakia (Timothy), Jory (Jade), Jorinee, Ashley, and Robert, his great-grandchildren: Jory Jr., Jeremiah, and Jrue, and a host of other relatives and friends.
