VERNA D. BENTON-JACKSON Verna D. Benton-Jackson was born November 2, 1947 to William and Pauline Benton in Fargo Arkansas. Verna was educated in Cotton Plant, AR public school system, and graduated from Cotton Plant Vocational High in 1967, and relocated to Chicago, IL. Verna was baptized in Jesus’ name in 1969 at Grace Apostolic Faith Church in Chicago, IL where the late Suff. Bish. Cornelius Southern was pastor. Over the years, Verna served faithfully under the pastorage of Suff Bish. Southern (1st Lady Gussie Southern) and Dist. Eld. Maurice Southern (1st Lady Rhonda Southern) in various areas of the ministry - President of the Missionary Department, Sunday school secretary, Health Professional (Nurses’ Guild) and the kitchen staff. Verna was also a member of the Illinois District Council of the PAW, working with the Missionary Department and the Health Professionals. Verna held various jobs and was last employed by Sweetheart Cup Co. for over 23 years. She was also a foster parent and child care provider for the state of Illinois. Verna loved baking, cooking, making flower arrangement, and planning large family gatherings, graduation and birthday parties, and was always cooking something for others. On June 4, 1994 Verna married the love of her, life Dale Jackson, and move to Matteson Il where they lived for the last 26 years, raising family and extend family. Preceding Verna in death, her father and mother, William Benton & Pauline Terry; stepfather James D. Terry; grandfather Willie D. Rodgers; grandmothers, Ellen Moore & Ophelia Benton; great-grandmother, Vader Madden; sister, Zodie Moore; brothers, James G. Terry, Lamont Truvillion & Leonard Stevenson; Mother Hallie “Honey” Carlton, a very special friend. Curtis Courtney Benton, her son, followed her in death (4.20.2020). Verna made her transition on March 27, 2020 at 8:06 am. She leaves to cherish her loving memories, her husband of 26 years Dale Jackson, Stepmother, Charlotte Benton of Compton CA; four sons, Darrell Benton, Rodney Benton (Kelly), Justin Moore, all of Chicago Il, Dale Jackson Jr (Jill) of Wisconsin; two daughters, Kimberly Blackwell (Victor) of Olympia Fields, IL and Neveda Witherspoon (Michael) of Matteson IL; daughter in-law, Charmaine Benton; Godchildren, Katie Hester & Jordan Marshall and extended family, Dewina Wright, Larry Bell, Dana Cross, Ursula Crowder & Joanne Myrick. Five sisters, Delores Terry, Paulette Terry of Chicago Il, Pamela Spurlock (Arteil) Country, Club Hill IL, Naomi Mitchell, Hartford CT, Lynda Field of Carson CA. Six brothers, William Benton (Zorka), Willie Benton (Lynn), Dudley “Jack” Terry (Maxie), Michael Terry (Rose), Elvis Terry (Kim), Rodrick Truvillion (Shirley), all of Chicago IL. One uncle, Floyd Rodgers of Texarkana, TX. Five aunts Dorothy Arnott of Nescopeck, PA, Louise Ivery of Texarkana TX, Mary Porter of Los Angeles CA. Joyce Benton of St Louis MO, Electa Branch of Blytheville AR, Two Special sister in-laws, Cora Terry, Beverly Truvillion of Chicago IL. Two special friends Colie Gills and Anne Gordon. 22 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and .the Grace Apostolic Faith Church Family. Verna “Buddy”, Each of us received something from our Mom, Pauline Barker Benton Terry. I got her features you got her generous spirit. It took maturity for me to figure out why a woman with eleven children were always opening our doors to more children. Over the years I saw you opening your doors and heart to others just like Momma did. If you saw a need you didn’t hesitate to step up and offer to help. You will always be in my heart. Your sister, Delores I thank god for the 72 years he gave us together, as I talk to god about you being along, he reminded me that you were never along, and he was one that took you home. I will miss you very much, the one person that I could call and find out how everyone is doing or do you know someone from back home. So, sleep” Buddy” name given to you by our dad. I will hold on to 72 years memories until we meet again your big sister Naomi.
